kebab, kebab, kebab…

I didn’t go to the kebab shop for dinner(maybe it was self imposed punishment for not being able to spell kebab – nah)…Instead I walked around for a while then went to a pizzeria around the corner…When I arrived at about 8PM there were two old couples there.
I asked the waitress if she spoke english and she said “non”…well done waitress. You get bonus points for trying…
A couple minutes later I ordered by pointing at the menu and then she asked “Deutsch”?
OOOHHHH. I know this one…”ein bisschen Deutsch…” She follows up with a question of “meat…Schinken?”

seriously. This learning german thing is going to come in handy. I later asked her “ist der ein buchladen mit englishern buch” I have no idea if englishern is a word but her answer was “nein…Carrefour”…In the space between the … I made the universal sign of the book. I have no idea if she knew what buchladen was, but I’m continually surprised that people here want to speak more german than english. We’re really not that close to the border. They ought not to be speaking so much Deutsch unless this is the place where the German tourists come for summer.
…then again I know at least one German colleague who regularly visits Itality.

…anyway in the course of my meal 2 more old couples show up (one with their 2 grandchildren) and as I’m leaving a middle ages couple show up with their child…the point I guess is that Italians eat late. Again a stereotype that is accurate…who knew…
In the states the old people eat at 4pm. Not 8pm

I didn’t leave a tip, but they did charge me for table service I think…The table service charge is another new thing. Does that go to the waitress?

How to get killed before the opening credits.

Slow news day for this writer
http://www.wired.com/geekdad/2009/08/great-geek-debates-stormtrooper-vs-redshirt/

So I’m at the Hotel Dany in Marina di Massa. Nice place I guess. At least they have airCon.
Tomorrow to the registration thing and then maybe a phone after that. Then my to do list will dwindle to about 2072 things.

I passed a kabob shop…never did I think I’d fine one here…This probably makes my day…

the mall is open on Sunday…does this mean the italians are more capitalist than the Deutsch?

So in the last 24 hours I’ve watched two movies (“Hitman” and “Definitely Maybe”) and read a novel…Both movies were OK. Hitman was an OK action flick. Nothing groundbreaking in it. Watchable. Still not sure what to make of Timothy Olyphant. I mostly know him from Deadwood (an HBO show). I think it’s his bored line delivery that bothers me the most…speaking of movies I saw this weekend with slightly annoying lead actors…I have the same problem with Ryan Reynolds (from Definitely Maybe). I just don’t know what to think of him either. Line delivery or stiffness or something is slightly mildly bothersome.

The book I read was called “Bad Things”. Sort of a horror suspense thing. Was actually pretty OK (took place in Oregon and Washington). This is the first book I’ve finished in a while.
I bought this at the airport thinking I’d have lots of time to read in the next weeks. I read it…Now the only two books I have left are an Italian/English visual dictionary (gift from colleagues) and the Lonely Planet travel guide to Tuscany and Umbria (thanks DaNucci)…I can’t imagine I’ll be making it through either of those in the next 24 hours.

Tomorrow I think I have to go to a hotel for a week (something to do with Italian law for foreigners???) and then do the registration stuff, get a tax number, open a bank account etc.
Then I can finally get a new phone…

my phone quit working…

so if anyone needs me, just text.

Tedesco…where did you go?

So I have officially moved to Italy. I feel like I should write, so I’ll scatter…

It seems hard to believe that I was eating breakfast in Frankfurt yesterday. The nice spanish place at the top of the My Zeil…

Thanks to everyone who came to my various good bye things. It really was nice and meant a lot. Also still waiting for my memory book…ship it!!!

The greatest shopping trips are when you are in a new place without most of your things.

The shirt sizes in Italy are bigger than German sizes of the same name (S, M, L).

I need a scooter.

It’s hot, and the taxi driver complains about it everytime he picks me up from the airport. If he can’t adjust then I’ll probably be dying next summer. At least the worst of it is over for this year.

I want to go to Starbucks.

This is the most boring entry ever, but now that I will have lots of free time the blog should improve a bit. Here’s hoping…

for as much whining as I did it’s a letdown to find out I don’t have broken ribs…

Went to the doctor today because I landed on my ribs last week. It wasn’t getting any better so I finally gave in and went to the doctor only to find out that it must all be in my head 😉

She gave me some meds and a note to stay home for a couple days. Probably will still go to work tomorrow cuz it’s my last week, and I got stuff to do…

it’s 1 am…do you know where your children are???

thank you McGruff the crime dog…

My washing machine broke. Luckily I only have 1 week left here. I actually washed a ”load” of laundry in the bathtub today…I guess I shouldn’t compain. People have been washing their clothes that way for thousands of years. Made me think of my grandma Squires who til the very end was hanging out her clothes on a line. Common in Europe…Not so common in the States. Modern technology and all…

9 days to go…then I trade ü for è, ö for ò, and ä for à….

I didn’t even know Les Paul was sick…let alone still alive.

got back from a glorious weekend of sailing in the IJsselmeer (Netherlands). I took almost 350 pics so I’ll make a separate page soon. It was incredible. This is the first time I’ve gone proper sailing and the weather etc were perfect!

We passed through Amsterdam and it was my first time there (except for changing planes at the airport). I was quite surprised at what a lovely city it is. I guess I’m just a sucker for cities on the sea, but the canals running through the city and the crooked building give the city quite some charm.
60% of the Netherlands is below sea level…WTF!!!!

Got my visa for Italia! Am leaving there in 2 weeks from tomorrow. Scary time!!!

Some pics from the weekend…more later

Short and sweet?

Just got back today from the shortest business trip ever. Thank you RyanAir for having such cheap travel that it makes economic sense to go work in another country for 3 days.
I had a great time hanging out with Alexei the Ukranian. I have to say he’s my new favourite Ukranian. We chatted about cultural stuff mostly. I gave him some of my odd music which he will take back to the Ukraine and spread (he’s a new missionary).

He had some funny observations that I liked:
“We did not have comic books in the old days. This was the main difference between the Soviet Union and the US”.

“The Italians are very fashionable in their clothes, but not with their cars”

“the Italians will dress very normally, but spend all their money on a nice pair of boots”

He took a billion pictures of Massa and the area then gave them to me. I didn’t ask his permission to post them, but I’ll at least give him credit.

Here’s two that I’m in and the rest are here

and…

I saw no 60 year old men in speedos!!!
I’m off for sailing this weekend in the Netherlands. This should be fun. I’m taking the camera so pics will be posted!
