My fallback life of criminal mastermind is now out the window…

Went to the police station in town today. This was just another step in the immigration process (my boss: we have an immigrant!!!). We all had to line up outside (meaning me, some other american, a Mexican, a russian, and an arab (?) family). Nobody was very happy about the whole process (cept me who didn’t really care). The line was outside and they would buzz people in one (or one group) at a time. I had the HR guy and an immigration consultant with me. Everytime the door opened people tried to push in and be territorial about their spot in line…I thought the germans couldn’t queue, but this was ridiculous…I actually have a newfound respect for the Oregon DMV after today. The whole “take a number” thing is absolutely groundbreaking.

Anyways we get in and our helper guy is a cop (I think) with a shaved head a beard and a German cross necklace (the old iron cross or whatever it’s called. the WWI era thing)….Is a shaved head with an iron cross the right person to be helping foreigners???

Actually he was pretty cool to us. The process was a bit slow (maybe 30 minutes in a tiny room). He went through paperwork etc and I saw that he had the US state dept. website on his browser. He scanned in a picture of me…took my fingerprints and then takes us through a backdoor into the police station, where they took my fingerprints again as well as palm prints. They actually had a guy in gloves who was pushing my fingers down onto the scanner.
Luckily I’ve never been arrested so I assume everything will be fine. I’m going to get an italian I.D. card in a few weeks. Apparently the second set of fingerprinting is normally done at a later date than the paperwork part of our morning (this is why I said the guy was cool-he squeezed us in right away). He was extra helpful and spoke a little english. Shook our hands at the end and we were off.
On the drive back I ask our HR guy if every italian citizen has their fingerprints on file. They do…

And your snapple fun fact for the day is:
Italy is about the size of Arizona.

I’m not reading Nietzche and my brain does not hurt…

I guess this is why 2,0 is 2,0. He knows how to read and stuff…Good to hear from him. Allegedly I’ll be getting a real update from him when he starts drinking.
I hope all is well with you and Stephanie.

There seems to be a law in Italia whereby a diner/trattoria type place in Italy has to give you free food (like appetizers) in the early evening. I guess this is so people don’t get too drunk after work. These aren’t proper type dinner places, but I think places people go after work. There seems to be the usual snacky type foods…chips, nuts, bread, olives, dips etc. At one place near my flat they have several pizza’s sitting on the counter. You go in and buy a drink and can (I guess) keep eating all you want as long as you’re drinking a drink or buying a lottery ticket. That’s where I went for dinner.
I’ve gone in before and tried to order off the menu. They let me, but it seemed very irregular. They weren’t able to explain to me that it was irregular (language barrier and all…), but they were willing to serve me anyways. The guy at the counter had to go check with the cook and see if they could make me a pizza…which is weird because they were making pizzas for the counter. They probably were just laughing at the foreigner who insisted on eating off the menu when they could have been eating for free…haha…the american must have his own pizza…

I’m slowly learning to be italian. Drinking my coffee (espresso) whilst standing at the counter and now eating the free food on the counter. I’ve always been a hand talker (apparently) so in about 18 or 20 years I’ll fit right in…

I lost all kinds of respect for Lily Allen when she rhymed “al fresco” and “tesco”…I guess this is character flaw of mine. Those two words, just don’t belong in the same sentence. I’d feel the same way if some singer rhymed “Safeway” or “Fred Meyer” in a song.

I almost wore long sleeves this morning. This is a monumental day for me every year (when I wear long sleeves). In the end I didn’t and I guess it’s cuz I only have one long sleeved shirt with me. I guess if I get too desperate I’ll just go over to the Carrefour and buy something with long sleeves. It will have some sort of logo on it as it seems hard to just buy a long sleeve shirt without a logo on it here. My general philosophy is that if I’m going to wear a logo shirt it better either have been free or it better be used and old (like my camel t-shirt).

I watched “Children of Men” this weekend (in Italian it’s i Figli degli uomini). I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised. This was a great movie…
I’m giving it 10 out of 13….
If you aren’t aware of my rating system everything gets a 10…it might be 10 out of 1,000,000 or 10 out of 10. Depends on the quality of the art.

two dreams…

I rarely remember my dreams let alone have to force myself awake out of fear or anger or whatever, but I had two bad dreams that woke me up last night.

The first I was flying with my dad in a 4 seater plane (he had a private pilots license before I was born, but I never actually flew with him). For whatever reason I was in the back seat and couldn’t see anything (I don’t know who was in the other front seat). I think I was napping in the plane cuz I woke up in the dream and we were in a storm (I could only see the lightning flashing and you could hear rain). We started to spin and were going to crash when I woke up.

In the other dream I somehow lost my work permit and ended up jobless in europe. I woke up thinking this was still real and figured I would have to go back to frankfurt and move in with Matt or something. This wasn’t as bad or vivid as the first dream. It was about 6:30 so maybe I didn’t really wake up from the dream, but in the dream I remember being angry about it and yelling in the office or something.
Both weird…

I have another appointment with the Italian authorities on Wednesday for the final approval of my work permit.

is it swine flu?

Feeling weird today. Hot and cold. Sweating. Napping. Small headache. Took a bath and now I’ve been way too hot for the past hour. Kind of weird, cuz I think it’s cold outside. It was cold this morning. I actually had to put on a long sleeve shirt.

Because of stupid t-punkt taking out more money (Evil eveil t-mobile) I didn’t get a scooter. Bought a bike instead. Not sure it’s the safest thing in the world to ride a bike in Italy (unless you’re wearing a uniform like the Italians seem so fond of).
Probably not the healthiest thing in the world to ride to work if I’m sick  (more so cuz I have no winter clothes here), but oh well. That’s life I guess.

Currently listening to Elvis Perkins. Likin’ it…

I wonder how much a custom neon green paint job (with helmet) will cost…

I have to go buy a ‘hog’ tomorrow. Unfortunately by law it has to be below 125cc…which means my hog is a scooter 😉 – There goes the paycheck…

I’ve pondered just buying a real bike and driving illegally, but that’s probably a bad choice even though if I do get stopped the italian cops won’t know I don’t have a motorcycle license (autos only). The Oregon license just says something like all vehicles with a Gross vehicle weight below 25000 pounds (or something). Actually if I knew I could get insurance on a proper motorcycle without having a license for it I would probably just go ahead and do it…but alas I shall just make that a long term goal (getting an italian motorcycle license).

I’m a bit scared to drive a scooter in this country…the normal driving rules don’t really apply…I’ll figure it out. Hopefully before I get injured 😉

…and today I got a panicked voice mail from a friend saying why are you in the hospital…what happened…you need to call me ASAP….
here’s the lesson…just because you get an email from ‘joe’, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s from me 🙂
It was some other joe…but nice to know if I was in the hospital that people would call me…

OMG! I found out the most amazing thing about octagons today!!!!

…not really, but it seems the whole world is searching for” Octagons”, or “octagons in nature”, or “what is shaped like an octagon”. They keep visiting my page because I mentioned how chinese checker boards and stop signs are shaped like octagons…seriously google. Do some editorializing and don’t have people searching for octagons come to this page…

I have an appointment with the Italian authorities next week. I’m supposed to bring 4 photos. Every single time I’m told to bring 4 photos they only use 1. so now I have to find 3 people in Italy to give my extra photos to…I have an idea. It’s going to be the 3 people in the office who sit closest to me. I think I’ll tape my photo to their monitors when they’re at lunch. This way they’ll know I’m always watching them, and they won’t leave annoying notes on my pc when I leave for a minute 🙂
