Laura Marling.

I’m not sure where I heard of her, but I kind of like her. Nothing particularly original about her I suppose, but still listenable (and lookable – hot birds with angst 😉 .

Pisa is not New York…

so last week when I was in Pisa I noticed that there is some music festival going on this weekend…The Skatalites are doing a show tomorrow night (early 60’s ska group), so I googled something about pisa concerts today and I see that Gogol Bordello are doing a show NEXT WEEK!!!!

This excites me to no end. I was trying to think of the last time I was this excited to see a band that I know and I figure it was either Frank Black or Modest Mouse in 2007…anyway I’m really psyched to go to their show next weekend (and I’ll probably make it down for the Skatalites tomorrow).

so I may have said this before but I only ever heard of Gogol Bordello after seeing “Everything is Illuminated”. It’s a great movie and it co-stars Eugene Hutz (who is the singer of the band). I may have to follow up by watching the movie again this weekend…coincidentally one of the three books I bought in Germany is another by Jonathan Saffron Foer, who is the author of Everything is illuminated….

anyways (x2) here’s a few clips of Gogol Bordello.
As usual mind the volume between clips…

whilst stumbling around last night…

I came across some Two Gallants on You Tube. I realized I’ve never tortured my faithful readers with any of their music. I saw these guys with 2,0 and some REALLY hot bird in Frankfurt at the end of 2007 (stay calm…he loves his wifey).
They were incredible…so here you go. The volume between these two vids are a bit off, so mind your speakers.

Crazy Chong

Crazy Chong has his own promo…how can I not support Frankfurts finest…

The Jack White edition…

Since I watched “It might get loud” for the third time I’m on a Jack White thing… He occasionally blows me away.  Not just the guitar playing, but as a songwriter and a singer (esp his phrasing). So here’s some clips… Nice to get away with “Grinning in your face” during the middle of a different Son House tune.

It might get loud.

I saw a really cool movie in Frankfurt. Called “It might get loud”. A documentary with The Edge, Jack White, and Jimmy Page. Really great! I recommend it for any guitarist.

a couple clips…

I know everyone hates the edge, but I really like what he did in this song…Three guitarist stepping all over each other, but it turned out way cool…

Vespas and the Rev. Horton Heat.

So today had to do something with my health insurance. Always an adventure to do beauracracy in a country where you don’t speak the language. The staff was quite helpful even though they didn’t really talk to me. They were not nearly as helpful to the homeless guy who came in right after me.

btw…why does everyone giggle after they say “American boy”. I feel like there’s some inside joke I’m missing out on…
As in “oh…so you are an american boy <giggle>”.

I also picked up the Vespa today. Thanks Piero!
Bit scary to ride at first, but after a few minutes not so bad. At least I didn’t kill it while trying to start from traffic lights. Did have to make my way through the crowd of youngsters hanging out near my flat. They didn’t seem to know that not getting out of my way was putting their own lives in jeopardy, but hey that ones not really my problem is it 😉

…and tonight was listening to the Reverend Horton Heat. Great guitarist. If I had a guitar with a tremelo would I be good? Is he the only guitarist that actually uses a tremelo these days?
He never looks like he’s concentrating or making any kind of effort.

oh…I forgot to water the plants

For me, watering the plants means pushing them out from under the covered part of the balcony to the uncovered part where the rain will fall on them.
I knew rain was forecast and usually when that’s the case I push them out. They get too much water and then go a couple weeks without water when I push them back under the covered part…
(I give that story a 0.0)

Had a flu for a couple days this week. I found out today that if you call in sick in Italy you’re supposed to go to the Dr. that day.
In DE you don’t need to go to the Dr until you’re going to miss your third day of work. This means I have to go to the Dr. after the fact and get a note. I’m still contemplating just using a vacation day because sitting at the Drs office for a couple hours doesn’t sound very fun.
(I give that story a 0.1)

It might snow in the next day or two.
(…can.barely……zzzzz)

Can’t say no to chicks with banjos…

It’s sort of like springtime.

I heard birds singing today.

…and cheers Matt for sending me the Stoneking 7 Nation Army cover. I couldn’t find it on youtube, but since I was looking I’m gonna post a couple vids of him.

Saw this guy as well at a little club in Frankfurt. There was about 30 people there I think. Great show!

The below clip was apparently with a borrowed guitar (hence the new strings and problems).

This is great…When I have nothing to say I’m just going to keep annoying the Italians with music clips…

apparently he’ll be in Portland July31-Aug2 in case anyone around there reads this and made it this far 😉

What’s that in the water?

So we’ve had Polish visitors in the office the past couple weeks. I have to say most of them I’ve met are abnormally happy 🙂
…I’m convinced they’re putting viagra in the water or Poland is some testing ground for new pharmaceuticals that alter ones mood 🙂
Anyways they’re all so nice. It’s great. They tend to bring gifts for colleagues and it seems the Italians don’t have a taste for Polish stuff, so the logical thing (?) to do when one has received a gift from Poland that one is not fond of…is to find an american and re-gift…As everyone in Italy apparently knows – Americans will eat or drink anything.

I’ve got two bottles of Vodka, some candy, and a jar of homemade stewish type stuff that I’ve never heard of…I’m just going to call it grzsykyyski 😀 Obviously it was made by some gramma, and I love her for it…Lest anyone assumes I think badly of the Polish I can assure you that’s not true. Most of them I’ve met have been wonderful (I’m not being sarcastic)…(don’t worry noone from Poland reads this – Your re-gifting ways are still a secret)…

…and I just read that Possessed by Paul James (Konrad Wert) will be in Europe this summer…this calls for a road trip. Apparently he’ll be in the U.K. France and Swissland (hopefully not all at the same time). I’ll have to go see him at some point.
I saw him once in Frankfurt and the show was incredible. I managed to invite myself onto the stage for the third set – I also was responsible for the whole third set. Just yell “Third set” when he’s wrapping it up and he’ll do a third set…
The link if anyone cares…

I’m sure the Italians think this is odd, but some vids…

OH AND….this was a related video on one of the videos above…ha! christy! Diving, cheating, lying bastard…
